The History Behind the Harbour
Before European settlers arrived, Sydney Harbour was home to the Gadigal, Cammeraygal, Eora, and Wanegal peoples, whose deep connection to the land and water shaped the area for thousands of years. Their presence is still felt today in the harbour’s stories, rock engravings, and the very spirit of the city.
Fast-forward to 1770, and Lieutenant James Cook sailed past the heads of what he called Port Jackson.
